Bottle Of Wine

Our Wines

Our aim is simply to make good, authentic wine – wine that is a pure expression of the variety and site and encompasses the complexity, texture and balance that all good wine requires.

To deliver on this aim we endeavour to:

-grow the right varieties in the right sites

-grow our grapes organically and biodynamically

-process the wine with sensitive winemaking allowing the vintage to speak for itself

-utilise natural and cultured yeast where necessary

-ferment and mature our wines in a range of vessels and oak formats according to the dictates of the seasons’ fruit

-release our wine at the optimal time for drinking

We currently have on release 15 different styles of wine from our three vineyards encompassing:

Estate Wines

These wines are blended from grapes grown in various blocks within our company owned vineyards. They are representative of regional and sub-regional varietal characters, specifically Marlborough’s Rapaura and Central Otago’s Bendigo sub-regions.

Single Vineyard Wines

Made in small volumes and sourced from unique parcels within our company owned vineyards, these wines represent the pinnacle of varietal and site specific expression and are only released from the best vintages.

Sparkling Wines

Made in the ‘traditional method’ and made simply because we can! These wines are a celebration of our vineyard sites and the wonderful winegrowing climate that is New Zealand’s South Island.

Our Labels

Put very simply our Rock Ferry suite of labels was inspired by nature.

All labels feature the Fibonacci sequence as the base of creating the labels.  The sequence was discovered in the 15th Century by Leonardi of Pisa (aka Fibonacci) and is a mathematical equation reflecting nature’s growth patterns in plants and animals.  It shows itself as a spiral.  We liked this because it reflected our philosophies in growing and making wine and in the food we like to serve at our café. (organic, in rhythm with nature, and working with reflecting nature)

Wikipedia has this to say about Fibonacci

‘In mathematics, the Fibonacci numbers or Fibonacci series or Fibonacci sequence are the numbers in the following integer sequence 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21...

By definition, the first two numbers in the Fibonacci sequence are 0 and 1, and each subsequent number is the sum of the previous two.

The Fibonacci sequence is named after Leonardo of Pisa, who was known as Fibonacci. Fibonacci's 1202 book Liber Abaci introduced the sequence to Western European mathematics, although the sequence had been described earlier in Indian mathematics.
They also appear in biological settings, such as branching in trees, phyllotaxis (the arrangement of leaves on a stem), the fruit sprouts of a pineapple, the flowering of artichoke, an uncurling fern and the arrangement of a pine cone.’

Rock Ferry Label

Rock Ferry Estate Label

The label for our Estate range has a Fibonacci spiral spanning the front and back labels. This spiral is a grahical representation of the Fibonacci sequence. The RF logo is represented by a handmade woodcut and the ‘C’ in Rock Ferry joining the ‘O’ in ‘OF’ is also the symbol for Earth in biodynamics.

Trig Hill

Single Vineyard Label

The Fibonacci sequence is represented by the arc of ‘moons’ which are a mixture of colour and pictures of the vineyard. The gold foil geometric image is a nod towards the vineyard name, in this instance Trig Hill.

Blanc de Blancs and Brut Rose Label

The dots are an enlarged representation of the Marlborough Daisy seed head which is an example of the Fibonacci sequence in nature.

3rd Rock DRINK.jpg

3rd Rock Label

The 3rd Rock label, our latest design, is not directly based on the Fibonacci sequence but does continue the astronomical effect that our single vineyard labels imply. We have called this new range (to eventually replace our estate label) 3rd Rock to reflect our earth freindly winegrowing practices, namely organics & biodynamics. 3rd Rock is a well-known phrase for the Earth - being the 3rd planet closest to the Sun made of rock and we have also incorporated the biodynamic symbol for the earth with the letter O in the word ROCK.
