Tom Hutchison was a Wellington student when he fell into wine. After a spell working in a wine shop he set off to explore the grand domaines of Europe, and duly smitten, enrolled at UC Davis to study vticulture. On his return, Tom learned what it took to be a winegrower, developing his own vineyards in Marlborough. After years of growing grapes for others, Tom created his own label in 2005 together with his Marlborough- born wife Fiona.
The philosophy behind Rock Ferry is to make wines that are real and talk of their home, to express the pure distinct flavours from their site, where their roots are - if you like. To achieve this we have our way of doing things – this includes having two vineyards in Marlborough – one in the central Wairau Valley and one in the heart of the Rapaura district, both different sites and therefore giving us different flavour spectrums and nuances in our fruit, and also a vineyard in Bendigo in Central Otago, which is a vineyard in one of the warmest sub regions of Central, yet is 400 metres above sea level. We are certified organic and we incoprorate some biodynamic principles too to enhance our organic approach.
Nautre moves at its own pace. so it made sense to get to know the place and rhythm before building a winery. After living and working on the land for several years, Tom and Fiona converted a fruit packing shed to our winery in 2009, and filled it with a mixture of the best in new and old winemaking gear that are there simply because they help us make better wine. While we aim for minimalist intervention in our winemaking, sometimes some gentle encouragement is required and having some pretty swish equipment lets us do that so we can make the best wine we can.
We opened our Cellar Door & Café in September 2011 where we serve deliciously fresh organic (where possible) food in the middle of our Corners Vineyard, again echoing our philosophies and how we like to live.
