Wine NZ Review

Our aim in the vineyard is to grow the best fruit we can so as wine it can express its place and personality. To do this we need healthy vines and soil. By practising organics and incorporating some biodynamic principles we believe we are laying the best foundation to help achieve this and therefore let our vineyards evolve and speak as they would like. We spend a lot of time getting to know our land – there is much to understand – and each year we use what we learn to help make better wine. It’s a gradual, wonderful, sometimes frustrating process.

The Holy Grail? Maybe; what is exciting about Pinot Noir are the big steps this country is making with this variety. Our Pinot Noir comes from Bendigo, one of the warmest sub regions in Central Otago. Our vineyard is also one of the highest, at 400m above sea level. We are aiming for layers of texture and fine, ripe velvet tannins and restrained power. Every year we are learning more about the personality traits of this vineyard, the view is spectacular, and we love what we see coming from this special place. The wine is put gently into French open top cuves where it is left to warm up and start fermentation spontaneously, which lasts for about 3 weeks. It is then racked into a mixture of seasoned and new French oak, where it matures for about 14 months before being bottled, usually without filtering or fining. Clones: Abel, 115, 777, 5 and 667
