Tasting Note

Initially wild berries and juicy fruit predominate on the nose and front palate then the focused structure from the barrel fermentation and lees aging gives an elegance which belies the weight of the fruit.

Viticulture

Our aim in the vineyard is to grow the best fruit we can so it can speak of its home and express its personality. To do this you need healthy vines and soil. By practicing organics and incorporating some biodynamic principles we believe we are doing our best to help achieve this and let our vineyards evolve and speak as they would like.

Winemaking

We hand harvested the Pinot Noir fruit, chilling it before whole bunch pressing. We took a very small free run fraction (480L/T) where the juice was barrel fermented in a mixture of stainless steel barrels and seasoned French oak. Aged for 9 months on full lees, it underwent full malolatic fermentation. The wine was then blended and lightly filtered, to tirage bottling where secondary fermentation took place. Matured ‘en tirage’ for 3 years before disgorging

 

 

2011 Rock Ferry Central Otago Brut Rose

Pale salmon colour. An exquisitely styled methode traditionnelle; the delicately fragrant bouquet shows white stone fruit, lemon peel, yeast and brioche characters with a touch of ripe strawberry. It is finely textured and beautifully weighted on the palate, and offers elegant mouthfeel and juicy acidity. Fabulously long, attractive and engaging. At its best: now to 2020. 94 pts 5 stars – Sam Kim, Wine Orbit.

100% Pinot Noir grown in the Bendigo district of Central Otago. Aged for 12 months in French oak before spending three-and-a-half years on the lees. Pale orange tint. Creamy, smooth-textured wine, with a mix of strawberry, cherry, bran biscuit and subtle savoury flavours.... 3/12/2015. Drink 2015 to 2017. 4.5 Stars - Bob Campbell

Moderately deep salmon-pink colour .... the bead very fine ... The bouquet is soft and full with a good core of strawberries and soft, red fruits, harmoniously melded with subtle toasty and bready autolysis. This has good presence from the Pinot Noir, and unfolds red florals, cherry fruit, herbs and earthy complexities. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the mouthfeel is gently luscious, enlivened by soft effervescence ... hints of earth and herbs ... Soft phenolics and integrated acidity provide structure, and the wine carries to a soft, thirst-quenching, dry finish. 17.5-/20 Oct 2015. 4 Stars Raymond Chan Wine Reviews.
