About the 2014 3rd Rock Pinot Gris

Vineyard & Region

Rapaura, Wairau Plains, Marlborough.

Tasting Note

A lovely bouquet of ripe apricot, baked pear, pineapple confectionary and pickled ginger. The palate is generous & lush with mildly spicy, fresh fruit flavours.

Viticulture

Our aim in the vineyard is to grow the best fruit we can so it can speak of its home and express its personality. To do this you need healthy vines and soil. By practicing organics and incorporating some biodynamic principles we believe we are doing our best to help achieve this and let our vineyards evolve and speak as they would like.

Winemaking

The wine is made with minimal intervention, hand harvested, whole bunch pressed, using free run juice only. We use a mixture of cultured yeast and wild yeast, and a mixture of stainless steel barrels and seasoned oak puncheons. The wine is matured on lees for 6 months.

3rd Rock Marlborough Pinot Gris 2014

This is impressively ripe and fragrant on the nose showing baked pear, stone fruit, potpourri and a hint of honey characters. The palate delivers excellent fruit concentration and velvety texture with attractive fruit flavours, as well as subtle savoury complexity. Textural and engaging, this is an opulent style offering loads of delectable flavours. At its best: now to 2019. Oct 2016. 5 stars 93/100pts. Sam Kim. Wine Orbit.

Still youthful.. light lemon/green, it is mouthfilling ...fleshy and rounded, with vibrant, ripe, stonefruit flavours, a subtle seasoning of oak adding complexity, and a dryish, finely textured finish. A distinctly 'Alsace' style of Pinot Gris, it offers delicious drinking from now onwards. 4.5 Stars Michael Cooper's Buyer's Guide 2017.

Very fresh and finely proportioned with a firm and deep heart of aromatic white stonefruits and lifted yellow florals and some honeyed notes entwined with nutty and mineral nuances. The aromatics are refreshing with a steely edge. Dryish to taste and medium-full bodied, the mouthfeel is gently full and rounded with a shy-flavoured core of stonefruits, yellow florals and honeysuckle. The palate has weight and presence, with soft textures and good lacy acidity. 3+ years. 17.5/20 Oct 2016. Raymond Chan
