About the 2014 Trig Hill Pinot Gris

Vineyard & Region

Trig Hill Vineyard, Bendigo, Central Otago

Tasting Note

Tom thinks Pinot Gris is the white wine of Central Otago and we think the 2014 Trig Hill goes another step in reinforcing his view. Generous aromas of Central Otago apricots, gentle hay & roasted nuts; the wine has an intensely concentrated flavoursome & silky palate and a lovely linear acidity, complemented by a savoury spiciness. The wine's elegance & structure are products of excellent fruit concentration, due to low cropping & the warmer season at the Trig Hill site in 2014.

Viticulture

Our aim in the vineyard is to grow the best fruit we can so it can speak of its home and express its personality. To do this you need healthy vines and soil. By practicing organics and incorporating some biodynamic principles we believe we are doing our best to help achieve this and let our vineyards evolve and speak as they would like.

Winemaking

A lot of work is done in the vineyard for this wine. We hand harvest then ferment in a mixture of stainless steel tanks and older puncheons to build complexity. The wine is made with minimal intervention, hand harvested, whole bunch pressed, and only the free run juice is used - to achieve finesse and provide longevity to the wine. We use a mixture of cultured yeast and wild yeast to impart nuances of flavours and the wine was matured on lees for 6 months to build texture and enhance the mouth feel.

Trig Hill Vineyard Central Otago Pinot Gris 2014

A superbly rich and complex Pinot Gris from the Bendigo district, the engaging bouquet shows grilled peach, poached pear, honey and spice characters. It is sumptuous and beautifully weighed on the palate, and offers layers of delicious flavours and rich texture. The wine delivers rich fruit intensity together with seductive savoury undertones. At its best: now to 2019. Oct 2016. 5 stars. 94/100pts. Sam Kim. Wine Orbit.

Light lemon/green, it is weighty (14 per cent alcohol) and complex, with rich, vibrant, stonefruit flavours to the fore, fresh acidity, excellent depth and harmony, and a long, dryish, very finely poised finish. 5 stars, Michael Cooper's Buyers Guide 2017.

The nose is elegant with a rounded and softly concentrated core of piquant white and yellow stonefruits along with floral and nutty notes, and hints of honeysuckle. The aromatics possess an underlying steely freshness and vitality ... with delicacy and poise. Dryish to taste and medium-full bodied, the palate is fresh and lively with a tight heart of white stonefruits lifted with florals, and entwined with savoury nutty and honeysuckle notes. The palate has elegance and tautness, the flavours showing style and restraint, underlined by soft textures and brisk, lacy acidity. The wine flows with energy and vibrancy.. 18.0-/20 Oct 2016.
