About the 2016 Orchard Pinot Gris/Pinot Blanc

Vineyard & Region

Rapaura, Wairau Plains, Marlborough.

Tasting Note

The burnt orange hue of this wine is often described in France as “the eye of the peacock”, but given its New Zealand origin we prefer to describe the colour as “the eye of the pukeko”. The wine has an intricate bouquet of apricot conserve, pear drops, and toasted coconut with hints of almond nougat. The palate has a luscious soft core, with flavours of citrus peel, kumquat and nectarine, which is framed by elegant tannins - a trademark of white wines which have been skin fermented in this style.

Technical:            Alc 13.5%      T.A 5.6g/l      pH 3.62      R.S 3.3g/L

Our aim in the vineyard is to grow the best fruit we can so it can speak of its home and express its personality. To do this you need healthy vines and soil. By practicing organics and incorporating some biodynamic principles we believe we are doing our best to help achieve this and let our vineyards evolve and speak as they would like.

75% Pinot Gris from our Winery Block & 25% Pinot Blanc from our Plum Tree Block, were hand harvested and destemmed to an open top French oak cuve. The 2 varietals were allowed to warm and spontaneously co-ferment on skins with indigenous yeasts. During this period the cap /surface was lightly plunged daily. After a total of 30 days on skins, the wine was drained and gently pressed to 1 neutral seasoned oak barrel, 1 seasoned oak puncheon and 1 stainless steel barrel. The wine was aged in these vessels for 14 months prior to bottling.
