Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc has created a global identity of being a young and fresh style, but here at Rock Ferry we don’t adhere to every stereotype. For International Sauvignon Blanc Day we decided to test people’s perceptions of New Zealand’s best known grape variety.
We are continually asked how do you know if a wine will age well and how long can you keep Sauvignon Blanc for. We decided the only way to truly test this was to offer a tasting of five different vintages, starting with our current release 2018 3rd Rock wine and finishing with a 2008 vintage, that was a blend of barrel and tank ferments.
As we anticipated the fresh acidity and vibrant tropical fruit of the 2018 vintage appealed to everyone but refreshingly the 2013 and 2010 vintages on show impressed and surprised a vast number of guests. The fruit quality of two of our best vintages at Rock Ferry Wines really shone through and showed that nature itself, coupled with the work from the vineyard and winery teams, often determines how well a wine will develop over time.
